Silicone Tapes
Silicone Rubber Self Fusing Electrical Tape meeting A-A-59163, MIL-I-46852 & MIL-I-22444 Specifications and Summary
365°F / 180°C Continuous Exposure: Higher Intermittent
FlameShield™ rectangular (Type I) and triangular (Type II) profile silicone rubber self-fusing self-amalgamating compression tapes meeting various OEM manufacturer's and A-A-59163, Mil-I-46852 or Mil-I-22444 specification are used for a variety of critical electrical wiring and cable splicing and protection jobs. Especially suited for aviation and marine environments, as well as outdoor weathering environments. Summary page.
The tape has no adhesive, but sticks to itself (self-fuses or self amalgamating) when stretched and wrapped onto itself. The tapes starts curing within minutes, and after several hours cannot be unwound or removed without using a sharp knife or blade. This tape makes a waterproof, weatherproof and air tight protection.
This tape is available in oxide-red and black colors - other colors are custom run. The triangular tape has a guideline stripe in the center which aids in achieving a 50% spiral wrap. Triangular levelwrap tapes provide a smooth surface on spiral wrapping, preventing the tape wrap area from snagging when pulling a wire or cable through a bundle or over objects or openings.
FlameShield™ tapes meeting A-A-59163, Mil-I-46852 and Mil-I-22444 provide superior electrical insulation with a minimum of 300 volts per mil (.001") of tape thickness at 365°F / 180°C. A 20mil tape therefore provides 6000 volts per wrap of insulation value. This tape is also used to wrap hydraulic connections and to make vibration resistant bumpers and spacers for wiring, cable, hose, pipes and lines. This tape is used to wrap and hold insulation in place on hot air ducts.
What is the difference between Rectangular (Type I) and
Triangular (Type II) profile tape ?
Triangular (Type II) profile tape ?
Rectangular profile tape is the same thickness across the width of the tape, no matter where you measure it. Triangular profile tape is the specified thickness in the center or middle of the tape's width, and tapers in thickness toward each side (the taper has a known thickness specification).
Generally speaking, both tapes can be used for any suitable application - however, rectangular tapes will not cone under the pressure of back-shell clamps on connectors. Triangular tapes have a guideline stripe running down the middle of the tape (the color of the guideline indicates the tape's thickness without having to measure - handy when using multiple thickness tapes in an application) to aid in spiral wrapping the tape when used in cable joining or repair applications. Either tape can be used for both applications. Triangular tape results in a smoother surface finish in spiral wrap applications.

What is the difference between A-A-59163 / MIL-I-46852 (Rectangular Type I and
Triangular Type II) and MIL-I-22444 tape?
Triangular Type II) and MIL-I-22444 tape?
All Mil-I-22444 tapes are rectangular profile and have a built-in sinusoidal glass reinforcement layer which limits the stretch of the tape to either 15% (SB tape) or 25% (SA tape). Mil-I-22444 tapes do not have a guideline.
No A-A-59163 or MIL-I-46852 tape has a reinforcement/limited stretch layer. MIL-I-22444 tapes are not called Type I or Type II in the official specification, although there are some instances of the tape being called Type III by some distributors.
The glass substrate sinusoidal tape embedded in the middle of the Mil-I-22444 tapes is 0.008" thick. The photo to the right is a clear silicone tape meeting Mil-I-22444 specification where the sinusoidal glass substrate can be seen.
Exceptions to the rules
Of course someone has to be different...... Rohr Goodrich Aerostructures RMS315 tapes are named contrary to the standard naming contained in the specifications. Their "Type I" tape has a sinusoidal weave glass support layer. Their "Type II" tape is a triangular profile unsupported. Their "Type III" tape is a rectangular profile unsupported.
